Jack of all trades, master of none

Pendidikan Milik Kita Bersama

(HINT: Google for it!)

Paralelisme I/O

  •  Grid/Cloud Computing. MPICH, MPI, dkk.
  • Cluster. Beowulf dkk.
  • Cyber Foraging. Bagian dari Pervasive Computing.

Anti-Paralelisme

Virtualization (Sabame, satu barang rame-rame): Xen, VMWare, dkk.

Bukan Untuk Paralelisme Tapi Paralel

DRP (Disaster Recovery Plan)

  • DRDB. Network block device synced each other.
  • Master-Slave.
Siapa Yang Bertanggung Jawab?

Siapa Yang Bertanggung Jawab?

Bye-bye Sun…

Bye-bye Sun…

Go to sun.com and redirected to oracle.com. Does that mean Sun is over?

Sun known for their delicate documentations.  Does that mean we just lost yet another quality company?

Yes I know that Sun bought by Oracle, but by disabling its website means that Oracle is totally putting Sun under her wing. By disabling Sun’s  website, this has a deeper meaning that Oracle also change the policy around Sun. My guess, so does the documentation style. Hey, I’m not Sun employee, it’s just that….

Entahlah…

Entahlah…

Kemarin sewaktu saya dan teman saya hendak mengambil uang dari ATM, saya melihat teman saya celingak-celinguk lalu meraba-raba permukaan ATM. Terus, dia lalu memeriksa mulut tempat masukan ATM.

Bank Indonesia dalam Peraturan Bank Indonesia (PBI) No 51. Tahun 2005 tentang Alat Pembayaran Menggunakan Kartu (APMK), mewajibkan setiap Bank/Institusi penerbit kartu kredit/debit untuk mengaplikasikan teknologi smart card/chip card untuk setiap penerbitan/penggantian kartu per tanggal 1 September 2006. [KMP]

Just Updating

My Ubuntu Lucid now running well. I use KDE plasma-netbook and looking great and stable. KRunner occasionally crashed, but it’s acceptable because of Alpha version. But, all-in-all, my computer is rocking solid:

$ uptime
12:15:10 up 2 days, 22:48,  2 users,  load average: 0.38, 0.51, 0.36

FYI, last quarter of 2009 is  a bad year for ATi cards because of the migration from DRM to DRM2 (MESA) which introduce the new architecture: Gallium3D. My poor Debian is not in the right state right now because of the legal issue that made Debian stripped away all the (working) firmware. Fortunately, kernel 2.6.33 would be the comeback of ATi cards and hopefully will be able to get my Debian workstation well. In the meantime, hello Ubuntu! 😀

An interesting note about Debian is that GRUB 2 had given some love and now using graphical menu selector. It was something from GSOC 2008, but it wasn’t implemented because of the font legal issue. Now it’s on Debian Experimental, given that Lucid still synchronizing from Debian, it is a matter of time before Ubuntu got that one too. If you want more, you could give BURG, a GRUB pretified version, a try.

== Next is a human side of me, just stop here if you don’t like it 😀 ==

In The Same Condolence

In The Same Condolence

Today’s half pole flag not only attributed for Gusdur, but also for the death of professional Indonesian soccer. Yesterday’s defeat is the shame we all have to take. Why are we still watching? Why are we still believing? Why am I still hoping that they are good enough?

Ever since the incident with Thailand, “Sepak bola gajah” (elephant soccer), Indonesian soccer team degrading into suckers. Yet, I see shining stars like Hendro Kartiko, Bambang Pamungkas, and (my favorite) Kurniawan arise but only to fall. I also admire Boas, but unfortunately the incident with his leg made him not like the one used to be. We have Markus Horizon, but….

Ah, gotta go to work, now. That Indonesian supporter that rushed into the field were doing the right job expressing of how we, the Indonesian fan, frustrated. Frustrated not by the match, but by the quality that had been given by today’s Indonesian football system. He was the man of the match.

Avatar in My Opinion

Avatar in My Opinion

Hopefully I’m not spoiled the movie. I wanted to write it in my style, just like in my old blog, talking about Mark Weiser, geo sciences, and stuff. I pulled them off because this is Christmas! I don’t want to bother people with heavy stuff. But, hey, I want to talk about it anyway in hopefully a light review.

I was triffled when I saw the last scene, when the movie showed the world of Na’vi.  OMG, so much resemblence with the rainforest. There I was, the last person watching and was thinking: “God, I may be the last generation that can watch the real thing”. My children may not see the forest as it used to be, or just like the movie said, we killed our own mother.

Could we be the generation that severe the bond?

Btw, I love the movie and it has so much Indonesia as reference. The dance is so Kecak! The plants and custom, so much like in Kalimantan. It really have the theme of today’s world. It in theme with COP15 and it does have the really sensitive theme: Technology vs Nature.

Sensitive, because I live from technology. Modern society also based on modern technology. Even our social live also affected in technology. The problem is, as the technology evolve, there is a gap between human relationship. The technology making private space shuttle, a pod, to protect human from others. It does protect a person from other, but it also put the person into solitude. Okay, stop here before I put some heavy stuffs. 😀

I’m sad that some people from IMBD hated this movie by pointing this as anti-American. That kind of hate also when Al Gore telling them “An Inconvinient Truth”. This movie is all about what our world is facing: “she is dying!” Take a look at http://www.globalwarming.org/ and see how much hate toward environmentalist people. Anyway, not all Americans think bad of environment, at least Al Gore don’t.

Tempo made an interesting fact when Emil Salim put a disappointed face towards Bush Sr. because he decided not to agree with the Summit. Bush Sr. invited Emil Salim and talked about how the Congress not agreeing to the environmental act so that he as the leader have to refuse. Then, he put his own account to help the environment.

It shows that America must not be viewed as her president, but the whole system. You can’t blame Obama for his lingering action. It’s just that it doesn’t work that way. Interestingly, the system can shut people with voice. How Patriot Act can shut people from using First Amendments, it’s amusing! Anyway, that’s other country business, not mine. So we stop here about politics.

There are another things that make this film is in theme with Indonesia. We owns of the last rainforest on earth, just like Brazil. We also have this kind of thing when many tribes (remember suku Kubu?) was forced from their lands.

The issue of corporates doing evil, even damaging many people, is so real. I don’t want to say what few that does that (that’s politics). But, if you read newspaper and open your eyes, you probably know what I mean.

Btw, not all corporate do evil, some even do marvelous things. To mention some would be like promotion. Again, if you watched TV, you know companies that do so.

Personally, this movie is like a wake up call. My paper for pervasive computing that was submitted on wednesday was about technology and nature combined. But, I can share that on another post. The Christmast flood in Sibolga was also a sign from God, environment, or whatever you want to believe, that there is something that we must do.

Is there a solution? I think Ubuntu as it’s name represents a lot of deep philosophical view. Blaming corporates, nations, nor people don’t gives us anything but hate. So, we must begin with questioning what value our lives is. Interestingly, “Lives Borderless” have that kind of theme in its ad.

All in all, this is my second time enjoying a movie just like Idiocracy. Even if you don’t get the message, you still can enjoy the movie. This movie have pop flick not like Gamer that vividly depict obscrunity. This movie have ILM as their 3D animator, that’s why all I can say that’s the reason why the graphics is SUPERB. 4 years of making is what makes this movie worth it.

Another movie that have the same theme mentioned is “Dances with wolves”. Some people said “Avatar” is a “Dances with wolves” in space…. In my case, Avatar would go 5 out 5 because of its brilliant timing and the pop flick. What a nice Christmas movie. :-))

Freedom of Speech

Freedom of Speech

Because of the comments on previous post, I’ve decided to express my opinion. A disclaimer, though, I haven’t made any deep analysis of the Indonesian Cyber Law (UU ITE). All that I could remember was when the bill passed, there were disappointed people, including me. I forgot what was it that made me mad and disregard that crap. There were things that should be covered that went missing from the law. Just for fun, while googling, I found this.

So to begin with, I would say that implementation of UU ITE sucks. It is being abused by some people as a personal Subversive Law. They can put away freedom of speech in the name of good name. Worst, they can make elusive way to divert people from the real problem. For instance, NONE ever talked about GOOD SERVICE in hospital, how to PROTECT customer, or how to PROVE your innocent in servicing customer. All that we can see now is how a complaining customer surviving the law.

USA, in their first amendment guarantee the freedom of speech for its citizen. The amendment so powerful that even more powerful than Patriot Act. Unfortunately according to stacyb on blogher, on Bush Jr. administration, the Patriot Act would likely to win the ground.

What was the result? Blunder in every decisions, including wasting money on war on Iraq and Afghanistan. This war on terrorism made US so vulnerable to economic crisis and made them so unpopular that it would take years, if it can be achieved, to regain trust on US from other country.

Well, that’s other country business. What I want to take from it is a hard lesson: Whenever you put away freedom of speech there most likely a degrading country. Speech is like a censor device that can alarming people when something goes wrong. Many years in Yugoslavia people are not being able to express their ways of thinking. After Bros Tito died, it became a tragedy. Many things that should be fixed are not expressed, but it grew over time.

Even badmouthing is an indicator of a good communication. With that speech, we can have a view from certain group of people or individuals that having distrustful thought over something. The art of handling of badmouthing is simply using your answer backup with reason. Then, from each side will be decided which is correct and which is wrong and which is simply a misunderstanding. Misunderstanding leads many to war.

The key here is REASONING. Without a proper argument, an opinion simply can be regarded as a troll, flamebait, and so on. This kind of opinion then can be disregarded and the person whom expressed it should be buried in Digg.

Now, reasoning comes with a prerequisite: FILTERING. People living in the society of freedom of speech must have a common sense to filtering and judging which is false and which is true. This kind of thinking is the base of science. You would properly address matters and not rushing into conclusion.

For this kind of society, the truth is in the hand of a good argument. Good argument makes science. Thus, people will move in careful fashion. Government will not easily get fooled and corruption will not be this powerful. Everybody can express their thought without ever having excessive fear. That’s why in many modern country, existed a handful of private investigator known as investigating journalism. Something that went missing in this country.

Now, regarding what Luna said on Twitter, people on Infotainment should answer back with positive comment on why Infotainment is a good thing — if there is a good thing in it.

Hmm.. that last one is biased. Friends of mine have an objective view that view both side as equally unwise. Unfortunately, with the negative impact of Infotainment, how celebrities getting divorced/provoked because of the Infotainment, hardly I could see the Infotainment as a good media. This case sold me to a standing position that called this media is evil.  But, that’s me and probably anyone else that defend Luna. Just be careful to the number of people that have the same thought of me ithat when became significant could ruled out Infotainment.

Lot Than Meet The Light Sensori

Lot Than Meet The Light Sensori

I’ve been very busy in assignments through the end of semester and am still. But, there are few things that grab my attention. Too important to miss, should be expressed on this note. As usual, comments except spams are welcomed.

One thing that got through my attention is the Bilski Case held by US Supreme Court (In re Bilski). For economics, this would end up many business practices including patent troll. From law perspective, this redefine what should be covered by Intellectual Property law. For computer scientists, Ubuntuers and Free Software practitioners, this means we can have true freedom. For lechers, this means we may have MP3 codecs in default install in the coming years.

Some of you may laugh about patents and said about the other GPL (Glodok Pirated License). But, with the recession going on, some company will go extra hard to have its top leaders Christmas bonus paycheck. Many great inventions getting stuck and reduced to ashes thanks to the patents. GNU/Linux system is one of them.

Many of today’s free software are built upon technology that covered with patent (patent encumbered). For instance, the font hinting on your desktop is a patent of Apple Co., x86 instruction sets are patents of Intel, MP3 algorithm is a patent subject. So, this is the real issue why your GNU/Linux desktop setup by default sucks.

Hey, don’t we have open standards?

Yes, we have a standard body that ruling out technologies. Organizations like  IEC/ISO, IETF/IEEE, Khronos Group, ITU, W3C, etc. are doing it. The problem is, many of these standard bodies include standards that eligible to patent claims. Some even went deep enough to be part of its core requirement. This may restricts access to certain technologies.

I’m not saying about OOXML. It already has a sister, the ODF. I’m talking about OpenGL, for instance. Some of you may have been questioning why on earth 3D drivers in X.org sucks. Well. that’s because some of the core functionality in OpenGL 3 is eligible to patent claim. Mesa, the open source implementation of graphics driver, is trying to sort out these problems by using varying methods.

One of the recent news in kernel is the hesitation of the inclusion of Nouveau driver into the mainline kernel. Nouveau is a free implementation of NVidia  based GPU cards. It supports Gallium3D, the next 3D open source technology that enables 3D state tracking, kernel mode-settings, RandR 1.2 extensions, etc. Some of the driver’s code are a binary firmware that was created in clean room reversed engineering. NVidia, however, doesn’t complain about it nor endorse it and remain neutral about it.

Patent subjects are supposed to protect people and give them time to fruit their hardship thorough investments in their research. But, there is an exploit that makes people making money out of simple algorithm that could be used to improve many technologies. Some even are too greedy that there was even a time when a patent can be held into infinity minus one day.

I know that this post is few years ahead, so I think I should stop now. Not many of you interested in this topic and this topic is an off-topic right now regarding the situation here in Indonesia where law enforcement is something in the crap room. But, for you who got interested, here are some problem that I want you to address:

  • Data ownership in Internet.

  • Free/Software business ethic eligible by law.

  • Copyright infringement and when it should be voided in terms of public affair.

  • End user agreements  and protecting the user from overuse.

  • Protecting open standards as an open standard.

Like Stallman said, free software is not free as in gratis but free as in freedom. The are social aspects and ethics that were trying to be answered by the movement. I hope this note will open your mind that there are more than meets the eyes ™.

Survival Dipites…

Survival Dipites…

Wave in Opera

Apparently as the time of writing, Google Wave can’t be run on latest stable Opera. Yes, I tried to use it in my own peril and it rendered Opera useless.

Doesn’t this means that web is not an open thing? Why W3C bothers to do standardization? Everyone has their own proprietary implementations. That’s may be a palatable offering in the past, yet it just hurting the whole community.  Why not trying to do standard things standard?

I know that there is an effort to make web standardized. But, since the era of Internet Explorer 4 vs Netscape Communicator 4 (ie4|ns4), we have yet to see the light. I see specific CSS value for specific browser, even it was an open browser. All that I can see about standardization evangelists are zealots that often represent their site in a poor state. They usually provide their site with simplicity. This to me, sadly, imply that standard web is a plain ugly site.

Don’t we have standards that up to its name?

Take a look at VRML, where it goes now? Where MathML would go now? How about SVG?

Hmm… how can we go semantics while the representation is bounded to specific browser?

Can we really take the web back or we just put it on another dictator?

A Modern Revolution

A Modern Revolution

This post is a post in my insomniac night. But, I’m trying not to be rude… (you know, people with lack of sleep tends to overreact :D)

From all GNU/Linux distribution, I have many common things: improvement. For instance, OpenSUSE would have decreased time when opening YaST, Ubuntu have greater desktop integration and friendliness, and Fedora gain very much speed. Overall, modern GNU/Linux distribution is well polished. Different from the time where I think a LFS is amazingly needed. Now I would not like to build another BLFS for my laptop.

An old school like me would find it difficult to find the settings. From the learning process of the new distros, I learned that we can now enable network from Network Manager. This brings confusion when I want to start my desktop as server mode and turn off the X11. Fortunately, “ifconfig” and “route” commands still available. Because of the behaviour, I would cautiously shutting down my GDM process. It would be nice if I shut down the X11, I can still have a connection.

IM2 also provide their product driver with Ubuntu (.DEB) and Fedora/SUSE (.RPM). This means, many of its (power) customer is having GNU/Linux as their operating system. Unfortunately, I’m unable to find it in their web. But, as this momentum I would like to say that GNU/Linux RULEZ! So, please for all of the education institutions out there: Please consider free/open source as a part of your curriculum, don’t poise your students with M* domination and stuffs! Things aren’t like what it was few years back.

I was just enthusiasts to hack into Beagleboard and building my own Netbook. I would like to implement my own machine with the following capabilities:

  • Touchscreen. From convensional, 3D, and multi touch, this is like must have. New xorg implementation can enable the multitouch and any funky input devices.
  • GPS + Accelerometer for better GUI experience and traffic (integrate with OpenStreepMap).
  • 3G+ CDMA modem. Can be built to have network bonding, providing better connection with reasonable cost.
  • WiFi is the man!

Well, few months ago, unfortunately I came to this site and found out that it was (partially) already implemented. Darn! I wished I was a year faster… 😀 Now, I just want to buy that stuff (still beta testing, though).

Can we achieve the same level as global people?

My answer, yes, we can! I can show you so many things that our university could achieve. But, I don’t have the guts to tell you all and for humility, I would like not to do so. We can have many researches open to our university.

Hey, do you remember I was talking about grid computing?

Today yesterday was a great moment when in class there was Pharmacy students following our presentation about building grid machines. We had the knowledge of setting up the infrastructure and didn’t even know what the infrastructure was for, until they showed how it meant to be. They understand the data, but they were only users of the machines. So, joining both world, we had an enlightenment of becoming a good team solving those computational tasks.

My personal hope is may the InGRID resurrect and gain its prosper, because we have the real deal here, real people with real data to experimenting with.

Wow, what have I write?

Dreams are dreams not illusions when it has steps and tools to capture another steps and creating another tools. Live your dream and may the source be with you! 😀

Free/Open Software is The Future!

Free/Open Software is The Future!

Rasterman, the leader of Enlightenment project just announce a great news on the e-devel, here’s a snippet of it:

We are working with a top-5 electronics producer (one of the largest in the world, who produces millions of mobile phones, televisions, sound systems and more per year) to bring Enlightenment and especially it’s deep technology to their products. In fact not just working with this manufacturer, but they are actively sponsoring development on Enlightenment and EFL to ensure it does what is needed for their products (beyond what it already does).

A great question comes to figure who is the producer in question? Let’s play.  😆

Nokia doesn’t produce TV and it already bought Trolltech. Trolltech was the company that produce Qt, the core component of KDE as GTK+ in Gnome. In the past, Qt was dual licensing (commercial license and GPL2 license). FYI, because of the dual licensing issue, many vendor choose to write its component using GTK2. Fortunately, Nokia added LGPL license.

It was an interesting story when we looked back how Nokia, a closed vendor choose to go into new approach. It had a stumble when its lead developer Ari made a shocking statement. Yet, thanks to the humble apology made by the man himself, the problem already overlooked. Ah, it was just about 1~2 years ago and Nokia had set the pace right. One of the respectable statement was Nokia as any other enterprise company just learning to deal with FOSS software. Yes, they were 2 years ago learning and now have a steady ground.

The result?

Nokia movement to embrace FOSS was right decision. It embrace the Open MAEMO (now Maemo)  project and the fruit is very significant. The awaited N900 product line and the decision of changing Maemo platform from GTK into Qt in Maemo 6, the next Maemo platform. So, I guess it isn’t Nokia. Oh, btw, now SymbianOS is open source.

How about Sony Ericsson?

Well, Sony and Sony Ericsson is two different division, so does that count? Besides, SE have already set its eXperia phone with Google Android.

Speaking of Android, there is HTC Hero that said to be launched in Jakarta in August. Don’t know if it’s available. Another interesting phone is Motorola (Verizon) Droid which proclaim itself as a strong opponent of iPhone. Unfortunately, it is only available in US.

Oh, btw, how about Motorola?

Well, it has its own GNU/Linux phone: Motorola Rokr E6 using  MonteVista Linux distribution. FYI, the dual screen screenshot was captured and sent via Bluetooth into my laptop using the phone. Motorola was the first phone producer that jump into Linux for its products. So, I guess the company have a mature roadmap. Besides, it doesn’t produce TV.

One of the commenter said about Samsung. That’s quite interesting. I haven’t heard of Samsung jumped into FOSS world. It has its motivation now: since SymbianOS open sourced, many company that revolved around it should take a slap in the face and woke to realize that FOSS no longer a kid’s toy. Samsung also produce TV and many household appliance.

My other guess is Sharp.

Since the beginning, E17 was developed and ran smoothly on Zaurus smart phone. Yes, this is why I think E17 is the future. Its low footprint will makes every cool device has a cool GUI in a decent computing power consumption. May be Sharp wants to have the E core developer a big hug, just like Nokia hugging the Maemo community.

But then again, where is Sharp in the mobile phone market?

LG also have the possibility to obtain the dream. It has Android phone recently. It has the motivation to have a leading against Nokia. I think this one also have the ability to turns against.

Phillips, ZTE, Huawei, and many arising vendor also have the chance to be the candidate, yet I haven’t see them in action.  Enterprise often uses various things to test its readiness. Because I haven’t found those various things, I can’t conclude nor include them.

Hence, my guess is Samsung. What would be yours?

PS: This post is a post to kill time while waiting my Fedora ISO download finished. Sorry for not having reference.

Micro Review

Micro Review

Still using OpenSUSE 11.2 on my laptop.

# Theme

Not like Ubuntu, every product have the same theme which very enterprisey. OpenOffice.org, Mozilla, KDE, etc have OpenSUSE branding. This gets me the feeling of a professional distro.

# Power Management

Here’s the catch up:

  • When I plugged the A/C adaptor, power management turned into High Performance profile.
  • When I was on battery, power management turned into Powersave profile.
  • When my battery went low, my laptop went to Aggresive Powersave. This disable compositing.
  • When my battery under 10%,  it went into Suspend into RAM mode, with a good warning where I could disable that behavior.
  • When I plugged the A/C adaptor, the laptop ran into Performance again and suspend from RAM got me into my original state. Heck, even the UI HotSpot connection and a SSH session still running. WOW!

SUPERB!

This KPowersave capability, but I don’t know if it runs on Kubuntu. I don’t have Kubuntu on laptop right now. Btw, Karmic can’t have my Fn button for brightness. OpenSUSE really excels in this.

# Community

This is where my previous disclaimer comes. When I was about to install development tools, I got a discouraging thread here. Honestly, I want to change back my distro right now because of the comment by RedDwarf. This is where Ubuntu excel the most! You see, this thread was on the top of Google search in term of “Opensuse build essential”. Of course, the global moderator and AndreasStieger done a great job to neutralize it. Yet, the effect still needs sometime for me to get over it.

Ubuntu have a statement: “Linux for human beings”. This statement was a strong statement by Ubuntu to make a GNU/Linux system for anyone can enjoy. If you see the structure of the forum, we will have:

  • Newbie section
  • and other section…

With this section, Ubuntu ensure that any ridiculously simple question get answered with good manner.  The amazing “Code of Conduct” makes sure that everyone have the right attitude. The Ubuntu project based its core on community-driven approach. Heck, even I came from Debian world where RTFM was common, amazed by this approach.

# Conclusion

I found it weird if I was getting discourage by a minor post. OpenSUSE offers a lot of new possibilities that worth of using it. The learning curve is about the packaging style which differ from Debian. Next, I will try to test Fedora, but for now I will abuse my OpenSUSE laptop. 😀

A Brief Thought of Cloud Computing

A Brief Thought of Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is the new buzz word. It actually a commercialization of Grid computing. A comparison:

  • Grid computing is designed towards scientists, it is  specialized on computing heavy duty tasks. On the other hand, cloud computing is designed for businesses, which have ease of use in mind.
  • Grid has little user but very big computational tasks and sometimes the user must wait on queue. Cloud computing has instances of many tasks and user can use computing power anytime, anywhere.
  • Task in Grid is processed on several resources. Several tasks in Cloud share resources.

Cloud computing is basically fall into three categories:

  • Software as a Service (SaaS).
    • User subscribe to online application.
    • Example: Google Docs
  • Platform as a Service (Paas).
    • User access a set of API to deploy applications.
    • Example: Google Apps Engine, Microsoft Azure
  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).
    • User access a virtual system, a virtual computer hardware.
    • Example: Amazon EC2

Benefit of cloud computing:

  • Reducing IT cost for infrastructure.
  • Reliable and ubiquitous access of services.
  • Easy setup.

Drawbacks of cloud computing:

  • Need decent Internet connection.
  • Single point of failure (in case of bankruptcy and mismanagement) in cloud provider.
  • Data privacy and disputes.

A note about data privacy, there is no single law that applicable to the whole world. The implication is you may never know in which part of the world your data is being processed and what’s happen to the data. An open issue about it is open and the world is learning.Reference:Too many references… you could ask Mbah Google. :DFurther Readings:http://arstechnica.com/business/news/2009/11/the-cloud-a-short-introduction.arshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_computinghttp://blog.rightscale.com/2008/07/07/cloud-computing-vs-grid-computing/
