My Professorship Journey, A Steep Path Indeed

Filed under: Uncategorized — imams @ 5:29 pm

I am writing this post five years after I’ve written my first post. It was written in 2010, just after I graduated from my masters education and before I was promoted from assistant lecturer to junior lecturer (adjunct) in the Department of Management Faculty of Economics Universitas Indonesia. Five years hence, I have made some progress, but realized that the path to full professorship is steep indeed.

Academically, I have participated in several competitive research grants, both as an assistant and also as a principal investigator. I have published several journal articles in this past five years, both as a co-author and a main author. I have also gained experience as a managing editor of one scientific journal on Management in South East Asia. Employment status-wise, I have also been promoted as full time lecturer (no longer adjunct). I have received a national lecturer registry number (NIDN) and begin in the lowest ladder step to professorship as  an expert assistant.

My next step to professorship is to pursue my doctoral degree. I have applied to several prominent universities several times and received rejection letter from all of them. Some say that I am too picky with my application and recommend switching to less prominent institution, while some others encouraged me to stay true to my target universities. All the while, the clock is ticking.

I hope that in the next five years, I will be reading this blog post with satisfaction. I hope to be able to obtain my doctoral degree by then.
